Through this collection of illustrations, designs and reusable products Louise aims to educate people about the power of fungus. This project is based on a brief called ‘A lot goes on in the soil’ exploring one aspect of the John Innes centres work researching Streptomyces in soil. The surface designs are inspired by mycelium, a bacteria that grows mushrooms and is one of earth’s natural recyclers. Louise’s playfulness with colour and pattern is used to explore interesting shapes, forms, colour and textures that mushrooms make. Plant science surrounding mycelium is learning new ways of creating plastics that are biodegradable and can help us live more sustainably. Louise hopes to help spread this message using narrative-led designs to continue the ongoing conversation about creating less waste.
