How do we share space harmoniously and co-exist in the same place in simultaneous realities? Gabbi’s latest project responds to these tensions through Great Yarmouth’s prominent ‘Golden Mile’, functioning as the tourist façade to the seaside town’s struggles. Addressing semiotics of British seaside culture through exploration of Yarmouth’s identity, tourist archetypes are played upon, with materiality strongly informing her process. Capturing the town’s unique sense of place, she seeks to embrace the sensory overload chaos of the commercial promenade. Themes of local distinctiveness and the notion of nostalgia are at the root of her socially engaged practice, encompassing drawing, print, sculpture and installation.
